Nothing but problems so far on the 89 bighorn... here's the latest..
On deceleration only there is a strange knocking noise relative to the speed I am travelling from the passenger side but seems rather centered...It only happens at low speeds ie. when approching traffic lights etc.
Note this problem doesn't happen all the time.... it picks and chooses and they are not related, so warm/cold wet/dry.
I can only describe the noise as 'wood knocking on wood' like someone closing a wardrobe door....
As the car slows down so does the knock...so
20k it's thump..thump..thump thump...
10k it's thump........thump.....thump
5k and thump........................thump
Any suggestions would of course be greatly appreiciated!

SWB or LWB? For SWB look at your universal joints in the driveshaft. Try pushing the driveshaft side to side and try and rotate at each joint. Any movement means a new joint required. Not a major to take the driveshaft out and down to your favorite mechanic. Joints are the same as hilux so easily available(last one I bought was 75 retail at repco Levin on Easter Saturday). For Lwb check theuniversals as above but also check the center driveshaft bearing. This is rubber mounted and the rubber fails after 20 years or so. Push the driveshaft sidways at the bearing while watchingIf you see light through the rubber bit its shot. These are more expensive to buy and you have to split the driveshaft then press the bearing off. Local garage did mine and didnt have many nice words to say about it. When mine went the car was undrivable below 20kph so had to drive from Stratford lke that The Otaki traffic jam was fun that long weekend. I have a spare driveshaft here if you want to try it give me a pm or ring tonite 049386074

Thankyou for your advice...The problem seems to of gone for the now...My mechanicy friend hought it may of been the exhaust...but as it seems to of passed he said it may of just been a stone in the tread... Having said that..now I have posted that it's gone I can say with almost certainty that sods law will come into play and it will begin again on the drive home... I have a very SERIOUS problem now...it nearly killed me today getting the wheel bearings looked at tonight...It's rumbling a goodun when turning right sounds like a flat tyre but of course it isn't... It started last night of the rimutukas and seems to of gotten worse...today with the bad weather I was doing 90k on the motorway just before the terrace tunnel and on the slight right bend the whole car vibrated and I nearly lost it!!  |

Sounds like a wheel bearing that has or is about to collapse. I had one do the same thing and yes it nearly has you facing where you came from. Mine had had a wof less than a month and 1000km earlier but water had got in. Defiantly be very careful if you have to drive it and dont if you dont have to. If it does completely collapse the wheel could fall off. Also it could damage the stub axle.
Jack up both front wheels and spin by hand and give then a wobble. You will quickly diagnose. At least they are easy to do.
