Hey guys....first post here. A buddy on another board turned me on to this board for info on my project.
First off, I'm writing from the USA, Olympia, Washington to be exact. I've been working on adapting a 4JB1-T into an 82 4x4 P'up in place of the very wore out, and horribly underpowered, C223. I just love the truck, and want a small 4x4 diesel truck for a daily driver. Be nice if we had something like that here, but we don't, so I decided to build my own.
I researched everything and decided on the 4JB1-T. I bought this engine used from Japan. Came complete with all accessories.....starter, alt, a/c pump, etc. Even the intercooler. Also included a 5 speed 4x4 trans complete down to the gearshifters. 2600.00 US shipped to my door...I think I got a pretty good deal. It looks to be pretty low mileage....very clean and runs like a top.
I have been posting details of the progress and pics on my website here- toughguyinc.com/isuzu.aspx
To make a long story short..... So far, I have removed the cab and bed to make the fab work easier. Plus I need to put a body lift on it to be able to close the hood (bonnet as you guys say ;D). While I have the cab and bed off I am painting the frame and rebuilding the suspension/steering. I have fabbed up a new rear crossmember. The front engine mounts fit just right. This weekend it is going in to have new drivelines made and custom made (probably 2.5") exhaust from the turbo back. I still need to get a new radiator and figure out what I am going to do about the hood scoop for the intercooler.
I am also replacing the clutch, water pump, front and rear main seals, and timing belt before I put it all together. My stuff seems to be fine, but it will be very easy to do it now before it's all together.
Once I get it up and driving, I will do a little playing with the boost, fuel, and timing. Already been down that road with an old VW diesel so shouldn't be too different. Just happen to have a buddy with a dyno ;D
Couple questions-
Is there anything I need to know about this engine. Particular problems? Things to watch for?
I have already removed the EGR. What is the butterfly flap in the intake manifold for? Is it fine to leave there and not use? I will probably get rid of the butterfly in the exhaust when I do the new exhaust. I want this thing to breath well.
Anyone know a clutch part number I can cross referance here in the US? I can get everything else I need from the tractor shop but the clutch. What are the chances of the clutch used in the 3.1 V6 in the Troopers here being the same. I'm pretty sure the disc and pilot bearing is the same but not sure the pressure plate is, or even if it bolts on, will it hold well enough?
Just wanted to share my project with you guys and say thanks for the awesome board here. Lots of info here. I have already found answers to alot of my questions.
