Hi Guys I have been researching the forum to make a choice on the best type of shocks to get for my Mu. It seems that a lot of people are quite happy with the Monroe Adventure but it is almost impossibe to get those in Australia - I can place an order with the Monroe distributor here but it will take 3 months+ to get them in I was wondering if its easier to get them in New Zealand, and if someone would be willing to help me get a set? Thanks Guys, I appreciate any help!!

I thought the Monroe adventure had been replaced with anouther model. If you cant find them KYB.Tokico and Rancho are just as good

No - spoke with shocky place couple of months ago and the new monroe range doesn't replace the adventure - it is lighter and more for vans etc.

Mike, thanks for your help!
Mine is a late 1995 Mu 3.1L.
The front standard shocks currently are the Tokiko - compressed 250mm, extended 390mm. Rear shocks are a very old set of Old Man Emu - compressed 365mm, extended 590mm
I want to replace both front and rear as they have seen better days.
The reason why I mention that the Mu is a late 1995 is because someone told me that in late 95 they had made some suspension changes. Im not sure if this is true or not.
My email address is lordmorpheus@adam.com.au
Please contact me if you can help in any way.
Lots of thanks Marius

Hi Marius
Can you open the bonnet and look at the little plaque attached to firewall at back of motor - has all the model specs on it etc. Has several lines. Top line says isuzu motor co etc, second line is VIN no. Maybe third line should give some other info, then two letters, a forward slash, then two more letters - e.g. AF/JF. Yours is a later model than mine and this precise group of letters might be on another line but its pretty obvious. This is isuzu code for exact month and year of manufacture, and will confirm model for shock replacement.
If you can get that info to me, will price some monroe adventure shocks here for you.
Mike

It seems the two model variations for mu in 1995 are UCS69GW and UCS69DW - they have slightly different suspension setup. Can you check firewall plaque and confirm which is your model.
Club price here would be about NZ$380 for a set of four. Question is how to get them to Aus without running into heavy bank charges - as happened when we sent a turbo to David (Pig 75) a while back. Maybe someone has an idea how to save dollars with this.
If prices are little better than Aus, I'd figure out what 4wding you will do - i.e. alot or just occasional offroading, then check what local guys are buying and finding good for that type of use, and go with that.
Monroe Adventures are good all round shocks for on and offroading and club guys here use and recommend them. But there are other good makes as well, and some like the adjustable rancho 9000s and some OME products etc are better for offroad - although much dearer.
Cheers Mike

Hi Mike I've got some numbers for you. The plaque says that the Mu is AE/JF, UC569DW. Hope this helps. As for your next question i don't do much 4 wheeldriving, mostly on weekends, and I've heard the Adventure shocks are pretty good for the road too. I'm pretty keen on them so whatever the postage or other charges might be I'll cover it. I'm finding it pretty hard to get a price of the Adventure shocks here in Oz but its the 3 month+ wait that would kill me thanks again for your help Marius

If your not going off road why pay the extra in time money and hassle to get the Monroe adventure. I would be sticking with either the KYB or Tokico shock. The KYB has a very good name in all walks of motorsport and is the manufacturer of lots of original shocks. The Tokico might be a little down market performance wise but in a 4wd you would never notice. The Mu will have Tokico shocks from new and I think Ive only ever seen one that had failed There are bighorns over here with these shocks from new that are nearly 20 years old and with 300000km on them and still working ok.

If your mu code is AE/JF, this means 04/95 for manufacture date - though truck may not have appeared on retail market for registration till a bit later in the year. I will get you NZ club price on set of adventures for the UBS69DW model, plus approx post charges, then you can decide if figures add up. Ask local men what they use for occasional offroading but mostly road use.

Full set front and rear Monroe Adventure shocks for your 95 Mu UCS69DW is $380NZ, inclusive of gst. Airfreight to Aus (3-6 days) is about $61. Bank charges may apply both ends which could account for further $70 or so = total round $500NZ. Banks bite.
I'm sure you've got other good product there for possibly better deal than this works out to be. Suggest you talk with 4x4 shops and maybe suspension outfits to see what local alternatives are. KYB, Tokico and Gabriel mentioned above and all could be fine at possibly alot less $$.
Cheers Mike.

I've done a bit more research here in oz , i spoke to a guy in a 4x4 shop. He can get me KYB's for $135 each. I can get Pedders for $320 for rears, $280 for fronts - bit overpriced and not that good i think. Can't find Tokikos anywhere and the guy at the 4x4 shop said that the KYB's are more aggressive and more suited to off road. He suggested another brand called Rightpro for about $130 per shock, but he's never done a Mu so he doesn't know whic ones would fit - also i havent heard of Rightpro before.
As you can see Mike the prices are pretty similar maybe a little better on your end with the exchange rate, and i feel pretty confident with the Monroe Adventures after reading the forum. So if its not a hassle for you I'd still like to get them.
If that's cool with you let me know and I'll make arrangements to put some money into your account.
Thanks, Marius
Geeves I haven't been ignoring you, I have read everything you've said and I thankyou for your help, its given me a lot to think about. I'm enjoying 4wding a great deal and I may be doing a lot more in the future, however I also drive the car to work every day and its hard to try and find a shocker which is excellent for both so I think I'll just go with my gut instinct if mike can help me out.

Hi Marius - sounds like you've done your homework there and the Adventures look good pricewise. They are fine on road and have a big 46mm internal bore to make them good and robust offroad as well. Don't know what they normally retail at, but I get them here at Canterbury club prices from a 4wd shop we use and his prices are pretty sharp - esp when you change figures to Aussie dollars.
My email address is andyfam5@hotmail.com. Email me and we'll sort out banking/postal details.
Can you confirm your truck is a 95 Mu UCS69DW? Be a hassle sending shocks back!
Does anyone have a fancy idea to avoid bank charges both ends? Maybe chat to your bank to get some ideas also.
Mike Anderson.
