Hi all. I went to my local exhaust place to enquire for 2.5" pipe on my 3.1. He said the turbo and its outlet is tiny and that its not really worth changing the pipe out of the turbo. He suggested to upgrade from the flex. As I already have a sport muffler and 2.5" squeeze bend tailpipe, he quoted me AUS$250 for a squeeze bend pipe from flex to the muffler. Is he correct and is that a good price? Is there a difference with 2.5" straight out of the turbo compared to that standard pipe expanding to 2.5" at the flex? What about 3" reducing to 2.5" after muffler. Does the 3" work like an expansion chamber to some degree? I'm goioioing nuts!

Hi Roger, there is only one or two ways to go here and that is mandrel bent systems 3 inch or 2.5. I had a pressed bent 2.5 inch system from the flex join back and made NO DIFF I say again no diff, got the 3 inch MB put on and the difference is amazing, off the line I reckon I could blow off a Nissan Navar 3.0 there 110 kw and about 330 NM. Cheers Bruce.

The sad fact is most exhaust shops dont know what they are talking about. The top guys all say 3" is the way to go for these engines. Bruce system is proof that bigger is better!
Dont bother unless you are going to change the dump pipe though as it is the major restriction in the system.
Go 3" mandrel from the turbo and you wont regret it.
Expect 750-950 for the system.

I have a 3.1 MU. I'm getting mine done later this week, 3" Mandrel from the turbo back and the guy is going to run it straight down the right side for me and make new mounting points for it. $550 - $600. IN Brisbane
I remember when I had my 2.8 MU, the 2.5 press made a difference in every aspect. With the 3.1 when I got the 2.5" press the only difference I noticed was increased rev range, but nothing really in the performance area.

Just a comparison for you exhaust guys. My last mu, a 94 3.1 was fitted with bighorn intercooler and scoop, altered fuel timing 15lbs boost, and a 3inch mandrel stainlass steel exhaust with straight thru muffler. It used to pull like a schoolboy, overtaking from 90kms was like driveing a v8, it used to hall arse. Still had a top speed of only 155-160 kms but boy did it get there quick. Even on 33 inch tyres. Mulover will vouch for that. I now have a 95 3.1 with the exact setup except it has a 2.5 mandrel bend stainlass exhaust. Still performs far better than standard but no were near as good as the 3 inch, it takes a few seconds longer for the turbo to spool up to boost down low, and mid range for overtaking is quite punchy from 90 to around 120 kms then the rate of acceration slows. Will still run 155kms just takes longer getting there. Will only pull 145 with 33 tyres. So yes in my opinion bigger is better. If your going to spend money replacing your exhaust, then go 3 mandrel bend, but make sure you get a straight thru muffler. You will be happy.

Still gives big gains over standard and a lot cheaper on a bighorn
