in the prosses of making some longer shackels at the moment, got my 14mm ht bolts for them today just wondering what people have used to stop the bushes getting crushed?
im thinkin pipe with inside dia of 14 and outside of 17mm would be best, is there anything else to use?
is there anything common that i can use and is easy to get hold of?

Is going greasable bolts with polyurethane bushings is not the solution?

That is exactly the problem with using bolts, they will crush inwards the sides of the shackles. A partial solution and really a hack is to use stronger plate (>=10mm thick) and use a centre spigot and bolt to help support and space the shackle sides. The better option is pins machined with a shoulder to support the shackle sides just like the original ones. See my website; www.toolsnz.com/james/4wd/shackles/ and the pdf at the bottom of the page. The pins should also be harderned. I machined my own and still have several meters of the hardened rod if you want a couple of pieces.

Other options if you can't find some pipe off the shelf are; 1) Take some 17mm dia rod and drill through the length of it to suit what ever bolt you want. 14mm? A very easy job in a lathe. Try your enginnering place should take them no more than 3min to drill one. Strength is reduced to 14mm dia however 2) Take some 17mm dia rod and drill in each end say 1", and tap to suit 1" long bolts of your choice. So no welding, but 4 bolts per shackle. If you are carefull you could do this yourself in a drill press. again the strength is reduced to your bolt diameter. 3) If you are really stuck I could machine some for you... just give me a week or so. I've just moved house. pig75 & agin to clarify for you, the crush we are talking about is if you tighten the shackel bolts the side plates of the shackle are crushed inwards. The width of the shackel can't be maintained like the original with a step/shouler machined on the pins. Also note, my pdf diagram is the orignal MU shackels for referance. It's not what I made... I beefed up the plates and added a centre bush to help with support in the now much longer plates.

That's why I used lock nuts, that way you don't need a stepped bolt you just firm the first nut then lock it with the second.

yeah the only problem with that pig75 is that the thread of the bolts will chew up the bushes, so you would need long bolts with out thread in the middle.
james w, i think i might have something lined up will find out monday, if not then that would be great!!!! thanks

I made stainless bushes with 12mm 8.8 bolts drilled for greasing. The bushes don't rust and with the grease the spring bushes last a lot longer.I wouldn't use urethane bushes again as they're too hard a don't flex enough. Regards,Harry.
