Which mods will have more HP gain for a 4JB1T MU: 1. Upgrade to a 2.5" exhaust pipe after the flexible w/ straight through muffler or 2. Mounting an turbo intercooler similar in size with the one used by a 3.1 Bighorn?
Approximately how much HP do these mods add and which in your opinion would be better to start with?

Do the exhaust first. Gain is slightly more and less work.

Difference you should notice with bigbore is your power should kick in much earlier. Turbo should be pulling hard from 1500rpm rather than 2000rpm+ standard.

geeves and mudgrip thanks for the advise. as soon as my paycheck comes in end of next week, i'm heading to the muffler shop and have that 2.5" upgrade! likewise will also have my JDM surplus Fujitsubo 3" straight through replace the factory muffler. that intercooler project will probably become a reality sometime august since mid july i'm also eagerly buying a 41/9 LSD for my rear end. just hope it'll match my auto trans, coz am not sure what ratio i have now. @bruce hope to catch your review next week on your 2 3/4" pipe upgrade.

mandrel bent is best but I would argue against not useing it being awaste of time. Mine is press bent and gives usefull improvment in power esspecialy down low and ecconomy

Wow it is expensive down under!! Here in Manila, I was quoted for a mandrel bent 2.5" after the flexible pipe (muffler not included) for only P3500.00 ($90 AUD). But that's for a BI pipe and if stainless steel was to be used, that figure would approximately be doubled.

Definately go the 3" the more people I talk to the more tell me 3" is the only way to go!
If I did it again I would forget about the muffler too.
Duncans truck sounds awesome!

I don't know how much fuel a diesel is burning, but cars like Nissan Skylines which rev over 6,000rpm and have 2.5 turbo engines (generally) don't exceed 3" exhaust diameters - Our cars have only slightly larger capacity but reach about half the RPMs. I think that the difference between a 2.5" press bent exhaust to a 3" mandrel bent would be minimal. I've received quotes from $400 to $1000 for a complete exhaust from the turbo back. I'm in Sydney's west. I've got to get the $400 job done and see how it goes!
