Does anyone have any experience with the exhaust brake fitted to the 3.1 XE MU Auto? I'd be interested to know how the thing works, and if I can refit it to a modified exhaust?

Its not an exhaust brake Its a cold start device. Its suposed to activate when the engines very cold restricting the exhaust to make the engine warm up quicker. Not sure about refitting or if its even needed where you live.On the 2.8 engines the same device is mounted just below the turbo but in the 3.1 they put it lower down

My dads 3.1 Irmsher has one aswell. We had a bit of a play with it a while back and found it activates in low ratio and helps with braking. I guess this would help with steep decents. The cold start idea makes alot of sense aswell, there is a switch on the dash that has something to do with extreme temperature starts. Maybe thats part of it.

Now I am confused. I'm pretty sure it's an exhaust brake, and as Stu says it seems to only operate in low ratio, perhaps to give extra braking to make up for the auto transmission? Where will I find a workshop manual for this 3.1 XE Mu? Any ideas, anyone?

I also drive a 3.1 XE...
Not sure this is an engine break.. the Auto works well in Low for any down hill work, having said that it will sit on 80kmph down a steep hill in D with o/d off...
I think geeves hit the nail on the head with his posting.
The button Stu mentions is an engine pre heater.. details of this can be found in the MU users hand book downloadable from the club website.
