An item probably covered already; but still of interest to most. My 3.1 td sounded a bit 'constipated', so upon checking, I found the exhaust butterfly stuck on, about 45% across the pipe. Lack of lube, due to the fitting being covered by a protective cover. Slick 50 sorted that out, now the truck sounds as it should. Power is back up, and economy normal... Paul. ( my 'real truck' is a Mack).

Hi Paul,
can you give directions to where this restrictor is? I'd like to check mine to make sure it is not stuck as well, especially since fuel economy isn't as good as when I first got the MU.
Cheers, Graham.

Graham; Restrictor is in the area of the gearbox cross-member, left side. Cover held in place with 2x 10mm bolts. Butterfly spindle has 14mm nut on shaft. Check vacum rod allows shaft to rest on stop bolts. Slick 50/ CRC/WD40 etc will ease if stuck. Paul..

Word of note. On the 2.8 engine this is directly below the turbo housing. Also unless you live somewhere truely cold. (need to fit chains to get to work more than twice a year ) the whole thing can be removed although I belive someone was looking into how to convert one of these into an effective exhaust brake.

I made mine into an exhaust brake a while ago. I used one of the vacuum solinoids from the polution gear to activiate the valve through a push button switch i fitted to the center console.

How much differance does it make? Is it a worthwhile mod?

It works well when going down hills. I sometimes tow my race car with my MU and its a nice thing to have just in case. I found it didnt work aswell untill i blocked off my egr valves rather than just disable them. The higher the rpm and the shorter the gear ratio the better it works.
