How many of you have a leaking gear box, especially between the gear box and transfer case? The MU has been leaking for probably three years has been getting worse. Anyway David (Pig75) is going to have a look at it for me down the track, his 92 model leaks a little to. Anyway the funny part (or not so funny) asked the one of the local garages to quote me to fix it, here goes 1 take gear/transfer out and put back in vehicle $500 fix any leaks in same $600, but you know I think he does not want the job :D o my fix for the time being is, before I forget these box's in Australia have this problem no seal between gear and transfer box's. 1 take extra oil when I go on a big trip 2 big socket to take filler plug out 3 funnel and hose to fill from top if it needs it A lot cheaper then $1100 to fix it ;D O Yea no 4 when I find some water to drive thru, bit hard here but anyway get degreaser out spray effected area, oil over everything, and drive thru the water to clean off. It is Friday night guys :D I probably should tell a dirty joke might be more interesting hahahaha ;D

Before spending that money try a bottle of Nulon engine stop leak. It comes without any garentee or recomendation but it fixed the front seal in my gearbox for nearly a month now. Even if it doesnt work its only 12 bucks or so. Im not a fan of these additives as the result can be tempory but 12 against 1100 does make sense

Unfortunately those prices are not far off for lifting our box and partial rebuild. Its logical to do all the bearings and seals while in there and check the syncros for wear. If the stop leak works all good but youll never know how long it will last but there is only one other option.

Theres always a bit of oil dripping down off my gearbox ... I've always thought it was the engine rear end seal leaking because the oil was filled to the max line. In another post, someone said that the 2.8 motor would do this if over half way to max.
Could this be a leaky gearbox too?

If it apears to be leaking from the bellhouseing it could be either the rear main seal on the engine or the front input seal on the gearbox. A clue as to which one would be the colour of the oil. Engine will be black. Have a very close look though as a leak from the oil filter, tappet cover or crankcase breather will first show here as well but a closer look will reveal the truth. If it is either of these seals stop leak will help but the only long term fix is replace both seals which is a gearbox out job. Might as well use stop leak now and put it off till you need a clutch. The seals are cheapish but its a 5 hour job to get at them

My leak is between the gear box and where the transfer case goes on. If I take the centre console out and look on top of the box under where the gear stick sits in its case I find a small pool of oil in between the fins. My subjection would be to periodically check the bolts for tightness as I found one loose which May have been the start of the leak. But being just alloy to alloy and no other sealant there is a fair chance it will never seal propally again. Have put a bottle of Nulon engine stop leak in, it says for leaking boxs and diffs as well, and now wait and see. Cheers Bruce
