The manual for installing a rd44 says to use a differential spreader. Is this necessary?

RD44 is an ARB Air Locker (front or rear, I can't remember).

ARB lockers need to be set up quite acuratly. If I was fitting one I would leave it to the experts

If all goes to plan this week, I'll tell you after the weekend.
Looking at the Isuzu service manual, nothing more than a pair of hands are used. Once the bearing caps are off, the diff. centre is free to lift out. The diff. carrier is held in a fancy bench mounted holder though!
I have read an American review where they suggest a crowbar may sometimes be used if the centre is being a little stubborn.
I think the ARB installation guide uses a lot of generic pages to cover all the versions, and stating that a spreader should be used covers them from idiots. (Note that this model does not come with a replacement bearing but the guide makes reference to it.)
I'll be interested to see if there is a 0.50mm interference fit considering their note on not spreading the housing more than this amount!!!!

Oh, and Geeves.... if you can measure backlash, you can fit an Air Locker. One thing I'll say for the Installation Guide is that it is comprehensive. Photos, diagrams, notes, hints..... and boxes to tick once you hace done each step! Yes, they tell you how to measure the backlash too!
