Has anyone repalced a diff pinion seal themselves and if so how hard was it to do?
My front diff is starting to leak real bad and it's getting time to fix it

I'm not sure if the front diff pinion seal set up is the same as that for the rear diff. I've had my rear pinion seal done and the pinion nut has to be torqued to precise factory spec- too little or especially too much and you will collapse the inside spacer which causes the diff bearings to wear unevenly and stuffs them. My garage torqued my pinion nut too tight, collapsed the spacer and two months later had to rip diff out and replace carrier and pinion bearings - a major job.
VERY important to have exact torque specification for this particular job whether you or garage does it - Isuzu agent can give you this - Mike.

The front is the same as the back with the collapsible spacer thingy.
Reading the manual you have to measure the torque to turn the pinion with a preload gauge. When doing everything back up again gradually tighten until the original torque value plus a bit is gained.
I won't go to the local garage and have it butchered and the Isuzu dealership has moved to the other side of town which is rather inconvenient.
Anyone recommend any diff specialists in CHCH? Or know where I could get a torque preload gauge from?

Hello Wayne. I had mine correctly done - after an earlier car garage botch up - by Gasson Motors on Waltham st. They are jap diesel specialists and very good with Isuzus - job might be about $100 or so - not dear and they have the exact specs and tools to do the job. Its one job I was happy to give to the experts to do. Good luck and call me on 3224570 if you need more info. Mike

Took the wagon into Gasson Motors and got it fixed. Cost $103 using an OEM seal. Thanks for the recommendation Mike
