Grease all your ball joints first as this is easy and was the cause one of the many times mine did this. All the other possibilities are harder. Check the brake pads are not worn down. They have a spring on the side designed to make lots of noise when its time to change. While your checking these you might as well grease the calliper slides. Rubber grease is best. Try turning the Cv assembly by hand. Because of the horrible auto hubs you might have to force the hubs to lock the normal way then park take out of 4wd jack up and turn the wheel. If it makes noise here it will be the needle bearing in the back of the stub axle. Replace this and the seal clean and grease your hubs bearings etc and all will be well. This is most likly cause but also hardest and most expensive. The seal is genuine only so you might as well get the bearing at the same place. Be carefull tapping the new bearing in Its easily damaged. To get to this the whole stub axle assembly has to come off so not realy a job for trainee amatures Should take about 2 hours for a professional or amature that has done it before

Cheers for that info.I have narrowed it down to the auto hub.Circlip for the end of the spline is missing and hub sounded like it was almost in gear but not quite.Took guts out of hub and reasemled minus insides noise gone. Now have to work out what is happening with hub.I will first have to try and work out how it operates or I may throw them away and fit manual hubs if not too expensive

Try a wreckers for hubs. You will still need to sit down while they tell you the price. Most charge about 2/3 the cost of after market hubs. For new expect aound $300 + You could also hunt trademe for a dogy complete car at that price

As geeves says it's not just a few bucks for some hubs, however when you change you will realise just how bad auto hubs are.... In my humble opinion is the most effective mod you can do to your vehicle for off road performance... you won't regret the $

They out of a 89 manual bighorn that had a slight electrical problem (a conrod came out of the side of the block and impaled the alternator) at 4200rpm.
They are still attached to the front diff, as i took it out as one unit. They functioned well when the wagon was going (no noise and easy to engage/disengage).
The price would depend on what you want i.e Hubs only, hubs and disks or hubs, disks and half shafts (including CV's). Send me a PM and we will see what we can do.
Cheers
