Hi there,
I have an 87 Bighorn 2.23 Diesel Turbo SWB and was wondering what the recommended oil is to put in the gearbox, diffs and transfer case. I recall hearing engine oil for the gearbox but that may be wrong. My synchros in 1st and 2nd are worn so would thicker or thinner oil help them at all?
Cheers, Nigel

Going by the book a good diesel grade engine oil is all that is required for the engine, gearbox and transfer case. I use Valvoline or Penrite oils depending on if I'm at Partmaster or Repco at the time. If your synchro's are worn then perhaps adding a tube of gear oil additive in with the oil when you change it will help. As for your diffs use plain hypoid gear oil, or LSD gear oil if your rear diff is a LSD (to find this our, jack up both rear wheels and spin one wheel, if the other wheel turns the same way it is a LSD). Don't think using gear oil would hurt the gearbox but don't take my word on that!

dont use gearbox oil in an Isuzu box..engine oil only..and for easy shifts use a 10-40/50 grade.

There are 2 things called gear oil I cant remember for sure which is which so please double check this. Hypoid gear oil is used in diffs and some oold english gearboxes This has a sae of 70+ and has high pressure additives. This will coat your synchro rings causing hard gear shifts but will quiten a noisey box. Not recomended. There is also a gl3 spec oil that is ok but the viscosity range is differant. Castrol VMX is one example but the sae on VMX is 70 which is actualy about the same as sae 30 engine oil. I havnt used this but its probably ok Some people have also used ATF which is ok but not recomended by Mr Isuzu. ATF also is good at escapeing through old seals etc. I use the local garage special oil at $8 for 4 liters

I like to replace the transfer and Diff's oil every 20K. For the last 40K I have been using engine oil (15-40) in the xfer case. When shifting from the heavier gear oil to an engine oil, I notices a small improvement in power and fuel efficiency.
Been happy with it since.

what grade of engine oil do you use specifically for the t-case and the transmission?
and i believe my synchro are worn, coz im having a hard time getting the gears in everytime. have to rev a little to get the stick in gear.

If someones put an expensive engine oil with anti friction additives into the gearbox then the synchros will be coated with nice slippery stuff where as sychros are not meant to be slippery. Try useing the $8 special from your local garage Thats whats been in mine for 3 years . Your problem though could be related to the clutch so you should make sure it is working ok

nigel i would be checking clutch bedal hieght adjustment and ensure clutche slave cylnder is in perfect working order, pull back the dust cover and check it for the slightest leak, this could very well be the broblem as the clutch is not disengauging causing excessive load on brass cyncro rings. or the clutch is about to fail , definatly do not put thick gear oil in it as this will cause gearbox mesh problems and make gears harder to change.
