A few weeks a after i got my new MU i went to Landcruser Mountain Park to give it a try, after driving a short distance (few meters after locking the hubs) i came to an abrupt stop from about 20km/h, the car just didnt want to move. I worked out the it was the front Diff (general assessment). I managed to tackle the rest of the tracks in 2WD. shortly after i managed to find a new Diff to replace the old one and swapped them out (easy as that, hey?... sure....) Well i finally got around to pulling the old Front Diff apart to see what the issue was and this is what i found. the thing i dont know is, did this happen in one short time? or it was worn over time then just gave out?

second picture shows a fair bit of burring. More than a few meters of driving. Was this the first time in 4wd? If so the last owner blew this diff. Strange thing is though that every diff Ive seen blown has cracked the spider gear carryer. From your for sale post you can see almost no wear or anything untoward on the gears. Maybe the bearing has been replaced badly by a previous owner

I tested the car in 4wd when i inspected it but other than that yeah, it was shortly after locking it in... its a shame tho... but oh well at least the diff is good!
that seems to be the only issue with it and from what i have read about diffs the wear mark is in the right place (being the center) and its only minimal. so looks like all i need to do is replace the runner and all should be good as there isnt any metal floating around. id say that is because its the rear bearing.
funny thing is tho, the bearings are good in colour and dont have massive pits in them?
it was a bit of a downer to what should have been a good experience. still got some good shots.
oh well... is done now.... changing it was oh so un-fun....
cheers.

hi just wandering if over tightening the pinion nut could have caused the bearing to bind? did it spin freely before the tailshaft was attached, although it does sound like the bearing was'nt pressed on correctly. BTW post up the good shots of your stint for us to see regards muvit

hi muvit, the car seemed to be fine, but when it went it felt like either the pinion or the crown wheel were broken as i could not move the car. coult not turn the tail shaft by hand either. the diff is fine tho if i dont sell it looks like ill have a spare kicking around.
it happened shortly after sticking it in 4x4 and it was on gravel prior to attempting a hill so sorry, no pic to share.
