Hi Everyone, the old MU has clicked over 200K, so I thought it would be a good time for the first major service since I bought it. Can anyone tell me what type of oil, and how much required, for the - Transfer case Gearbox Front diff Rear diff
Gear box is manual, and I assume the diffs are standard. The guy I bought it off didn't know if they were LSD's, but she normally only spins one wheel off the lights ;D Thanks PK

Diffs First left one back wheel with the handbrake off and out of gear.(do this somewhere flat) and turn the wheel by hand. If its easy its a std diff. For std diffs ie front and probably back any hypoid oil is ok. If the rear is lsd then a good lsd oil. A few of us are useing the Penright oil with good results. Gearbox and transfer case. 3 choises all are satisfactory. 1 the cheapest engine oil you can buy. Any friction modifyers are bad in gearboxes. 2 atf not recomended in the book but works very well. 3 a specialty 5 speed gear oil once again not in the book but good results. Dont get put off by the sae number gear oils are measured differently.

Whats the heaviest oil you can use in the gear box? I have 85w/90 syn in at the moment and the gear changes have been a lot better, but the box is still leaking so was wandering if I put a heaver oil in it may slow it down a bit. So has anyone using something different?

85w90 gear oil is the same viscosity as 30-40 engine oil. I had a leak in my gearbox that would leave saucer sized puddles under the bell housing. A bottle of nulon engine stop leak fixed it for now. I dont like these magic liquids but compared to 5 hours to pull the gearbox it was worth it at $11. A bottle is meant to do 5 liters so close enough
