I finally got around to replacing the top (input) oil seal in my power steering box yesterday, was having trouble hooking the old seal out so decided I'd come up with a great plan and remove the input shaft completely, did this and then replaced the seal no worries, put it together and then found out I can no longer steer to the left! pulled it apart again this morning to find a ball bearing race and all the ball bearings jammed up down the bottom of the steering box (not a good look) so have now ordered a replacement steering box from bits for isuzu. Just letting you all know that if you are going to change seals, watch out for the ball bearings inside it and preferably don't pull it apart. Hopefully once I remove it from the truck I can work out a plan for putting it back together, then will have a spare :-) A bit of an expensive lesson

Been there done that, those ball bearings are a big trap. A no go zone really for for most of us, including me. Take it in to a power steering specialist and they should be able to handle it. I gave my local one here a box of bit's and it all came out right in the end. They may have charged me the special rate cos I pulled it to bit's. But certainly you should not need a new box. They also set em up and test them. Things like backlash and other tech stuff that is best left to them.

I belive your in Auckland in which case you are close to the workshop that rebuilds 90% of all steering boxes in NZ Pity I dont know its name but could find out if needed They did the seals in mine and remetaled the shaft and replaced some of the insides for 760 (the last repair had been done with a speedy sleeve.)

mine has been done by Hutt Automatics in Wn.. I WOULD NOT recommend them at all....
First time they did it they charged way to much, it only lasted 6 months and leaked again.. they second time they put the wrong seal in and it blew out.. didnt even do a wheel alignment.. CRAP service....

Garth, you don't need to take the box to a specialist.I pulled mine to bits [admittedly after I took it out] the balls went everywhere but it's not hard to figure out how to put it back together. The hardest part is getting over not needing to pull it to bits in the first place. The other replacement bighorn fell thru after I agreed to buy it.His father told him not to sell it.So for the moment I'll just get the bits to fix my one so's I can get out in the mud again.

Keep an eye on trademe ever so often... there was a 1990 SWB with a bust turbo going for a grand... for a second car... well just switch the turbo over from the one you cooked going up the hill harry it's gone now... but I wonder how it would go if we had a club spares car... soem older generic bighorn that spares can be scrapped of and lent until a member can buy his own steering box/turbo/diff/whatever and return the spare....

Thanks for all the tips fellas, ended up putting a replacement 2nd hand one in from bits for isuzu, $300 all up, just to get me back on the road in a hurry. Will get the other one sorted out and either keep it for spare incase the other one starts leaking or sell it to someone in need. At least I've got wheels again :-)
Alan, if you can find the name for the guy's up here who service power steering box's that'd be great
Cheers

Hey ben, I've just had a good look for that part number, unfortunately the place I posted it was one of the pages we lost early on in this forum so thats why it isn't still on here, dammit! May have the receipt floating around but that is a long shot. Talk to the holden parts department, leting them know exactly what seal it is you need with the model number etc and they should be able to find it. Harry, do you still have the info on the part number and dimensions of the infamous power steering seals?

Ben, I wouldn't go through Wadsco for any parts unless you know someone who can give you a good discount!!!! Try Greg at GT Performance (old Auto 1), he's pretty good on prices and could probably quote you the number off the top of his head.

Ooops already bought it,
$26.15, but atleast now i can fix my 4wd.
What a mission really need to get a palce with better night lighting than outside to do this sort of thing, made a little light so i could see, was sweet, hardest thing about this doing this was
1.) Using External circlip pliers to remove an internal circlip is bloody hard
2.)removing the old seal again a mission, but managed it
3.)putting the new seal in again a mission so very tight,
4.)Putting an internal circlip in with external circlips, is near on impossible, but i still managed it,
5.)getting the steering wheel to line up straight is also a mission but is just a fidley thing
but after all that i did it in around 2 hours and dont have any skinned knuckles and no parts left over
which is always a bonus, haha,
now have to see if i can get a WOF now that its not leaking anymore,

I paid $29 for my last one so you've done ok.Tip for removal of old seal.Drill a small hole in the metal part of the seal and screw in a self tapping screw, carefully so as not to damage the shaft surface.Use pliers to grab screw head and pull out seal.

Or if you get a small punch you can hammer the side of the seal, it collapses the ring and it loses its regidity. Then the other side usually pops up and can be lifted out pretty easily.
Cos you are hitting the top of the seal it also stops any damage that may be done to the internals below any seal!!
My lil 5 cents worth!!
Matt.

Now why didn't I think of that, would have helped if I decided to do the job where I had all my tools in the garage rather than trying to make do. anyway there's always next time, though hopefully not for a while. And I still have to put my spare (old) box back together

My steering box is in need of an over hual, what I need to know is the box in the MU the same as the one in the same year Rodeo or Jackaroo. I would have though they would be but as we all know if you mention it is a MU parts people go all dumb, so mostly I tell them it's a Rodeo. Any help greatly appreciated, Bruce
