Is anyone using aftermarket torsion bars? I really need heavier ones for my Wizard.

I had some 'Sway away' brand ones on my lwb Bighorn but took them off because the front end felt unpleasently harsh.I put some Rancho shocks on in the hope that they would improve it but they made no difference. Regards,Harry.

Yarno has made a couple of posts on this. (You might eb able to search for them) I believe the final opinion was to re-index the originals to avoid the harshness.

If you have a lot of extra weight up front ie heavy bull bar and big winch, they can help but normaly the std ones are fine although they do lose spring weight over time. If you put in torsion bars that are too stiff then you lose articulation. How much heavier is your front compared to factory?

I'm running the TJM XGS TB's. They do make it a harsher ride.

The bar and winch is about 60 - 70kg (ie one of us could just hold it in place while the other put the bots in). This probably equates to 100kg by the time you take into account the fact the centre of gravity of the bar is a lot further forward than the old bumper.

So about 10% heavier would be good maybe a little more if your sway bar is disconected. Most after market bars are 30-50% heavier and too stiff for off road.

Don't know if you have them in NZ, but I got my one's from Pedders- 1220mm long for Jackaroo. My MU is updated model.

We haven't visited this topic for a while. Anyone got some experience with after market torsion bars since this was last discussed? There is now more weight hung off the front of my Wizard (ie bigger winch). Has anyone tried Dobison? (assuming they make them, their website is broken)

I put a pair of up-rated Maxitrac torsion bars in over a year ago, no problems with articulation. But then again, after a 2" suspension lift there is not much left in the way of downward travel :-( Indexing does play it part. I've added a 60kg+ winch on the front and the bracketry for it will be "up there" too. Add a 2nd battery and compressor under the bonnet, I guess that's why I reckon my bars are doing a good job!

Can someone please explain re-indexing of torsion bars

Quite simple. Jack up both sides of the vehicle at the same time using the chassis cross member. This will allow each suspension side to droop to its lowest. Unwind the torsion bars, knock off the back end and move the end up a bit on the splines. That is the reindex. Crude I know.

Fitted my new Dobison torsion bars today. Pleased with them on the road. One thing we did notice is the Wizard factory ones are a lot smaller diameter than the factory Bighorn ones (my mate was doing a gearbox swap on a 3.1 Bighorn so we had one to compare). Has anyone tried the Bighorn ones in a Wizard or Mu?
