Had to pick up a BMW on a car trailer broken down on a very long hill... Noticed that a smell was coming from the auto... And the auto was slipping. Is there a way to quick fix the problem.... Or is it a new trannie.... Was in 4x4 with front hubs locked and O/D off.Road wet. Lots of very steep hills up and down for a good 1 1/2 hrs.. Thanks

I bought the MU at Christmas so dont know when the last one was done. I have phd the transmission people today.....and will book it in for a flush and filter and oil. Will a Lucas product added to the oil help the bands?? Cheers

These autos use clutches not bands. If it helps at all it will be short term. You might be lucky and find it was only slipping because it was hot but otherwise things dont look good for the wallet. Did you get mechanical insurance? You will know the answer as soon as they drop the sump to get at the filter. If theres bits of clutch sitting in the sump its a full rebuild$$$$ Once its fixed fit a transmission cooler especially if you do a lot of heavy towing. This is a must on all autos sorry to be a pessimist on this one

Thanks......I will have to wait till the sump comes off.. No insurance ... Will have to start looking around for a second hand one....As I imagine a rebuild will be xpensive. Thanks guys you are all very helpful...

Get a quote first and remember a large portion of the cost is getting it out. Inside these are now one of the most common autos around used in 2wd form in everything from Toyota Avenes to good old Volvo In 4wd form they have cornered a similar portion of the market. Also a second hand one might not be much better

Thanks Was this on a sealed road? - if so not a good idea to be in 4WD as you will get transmission wind-up, which will feel a bit like driving with the hand-brake on - this puts a big load on the transmission and the whole drive train in general, and could have been the cause of your slippage and smell?

Wet road should of given enough slippage
