Hi All,
I have a strange problem with the auto box in a 92 mu, last christams i drove down from brisbane to my mum and dads place near newcastle on the way my mu's temp went right up to the top of the guage. I had a bloke look at it and he found that the gearbox oil was all but empty. Filled it up and no more overheating when i got back to brisbane i had the gearbox serviced and a transmition cooler put in. All has been good untill the other day, i went up a hill about 4k's long and what would you know but the temp guage went up and oil was pissing out from somewhere around the transmition.
i have no idea what the problem is if anyone has hints ,solutions or advice that would be great.
regards BradG

Youve done all the right things but the original damage from no oil might have come back to haunt you. Did the oil come from the breather (dipstick tube)? Is the oil a nice pinkish red. If either answer is no its back to the auto transmision people and best take the bank manager with you sorry. 4km is a long hill If it was particularly hot or a slow trip an auto will make a lot of heat and show the sympoms you describe. Hopefully it cooled down nicly down the other side. Also check you havent blocked the fins on the cooler with mud etc

oil did not come from the dip stick but it is pinkish red. I forgot to mention that after the gearbox service i had traveled from brisbane to sydney and back 2 times.

Someone else might know if there is anouther breather on the auto. ive only ever touched a manual. If the additional trans cooler is connected in line with the original cooler in the radiator which is the way I would do it and the way yours sounds to be then an engine overheating problem will also heat up the auto and vice versa. One thought that could have a bearing on this is the lock up clutch in the torque converter. The torque converter is the source of most of the heat but when the clutch locks this reduces considerably. When you are driveing down a flat road at highway speed breifly accelerate. If the rev counter goes up the first 200rpm quicker than the speed then the clutch has not locked. Most likly caused by an electrical problem as this is controled by the computer so it will only lock in top gear when the engine is going fast enough that a gear change is unlikly and the engine is at full temperature. There are several sensors involved so if your not fully at home with car wiring best go to an expert.
