Hi All, first post here I have just been given an early SWB 2.2 5speed Bighorn to use as a workhorse on a Club Skifield. Like others including the one I used to own, the rear diff has stopped working!!! I understand that good early rear diffs are like rocking horse poo. Does anyone know what fails on these and what ratio they are? Are any of the later Isuzu products of a similar ratio? Does anyone have a good rear diff for sale? I was wondering if I could find a Hilux axle of a similar ratio to graft on if I had to. Cheers Johnno

Ratio should be 4.56 which is the same as the later petrol troopers and bighorns (88 - 91) but double check. I dont know if the dif can be swaped into your housing or if the housings can be swapped as the spacing at the chassis might be different. Also the later diffs have the well talked about rear disc brake that you might want to avoid. Some Mu diffs are also 4.56 and slightly narrower at the spring hangers. I do have a diff here but its 4.3 and Im guessing you are down south somwhere.

I have two spare diffs here in Chch off MU's, one confirmed 4.56 in average condition. The other good condition and ratio unconfirmed. I can posssibly make one avilable if you need it.
just curious - which skifield?

That could be great thanks. I'll do some Bighorn measurements on Sunday when I'm up the hill if I get time.
The Club Skifield is Broken River, it rocks.
Are the spring mounts narrower on a Mu, or the width between the mounts? Is this dimension narrower than a mid to late 80's Bighorn or the early one?
Cheers Johnno

Just past you is the Craigieburn skifield road. If you turn up there from the mainroad and turn off on a track through the tussock about 1km on the right, it drops down a v steep little track back to main road. Very close to you and fun to try to get up.Mike

I think I read somewhere that the early Bighorn rear diff head is the same as the later front one which is why we can get air lockers for the front diffs. Harry.

I think that relates to the ubs 55 like ours and the later ubs69 not the earlier ubs16.
