hay every 1 well i was 4x4ing in my 1992 isuzu mu at mount mee today and i was having trouble engaging 4wd. It was fine for the first part of the day and then i got to a creek crossing that was about 4 meters wide and about 2 foot deep with a muddy bank on the other side. I placed the car into 4 low and tried to go up the bank the rear wheels were spining and the fronts wernt doing any thing. I reversed and had another chop hit it in low 2nd (it was going into low gear fine but only the rears seemed to have power) same thing happened again. The model has auto lockin hubs and is a manual. It has had a clicking sound b-4 but it comes and goes. It is running 12 psi of boost turned up diesel pump putting out 92 rwhp and 1800 Nm torque so i don't know if since i turned up the power the drive line can take it.
If any 1 can help that would be great

hi have you looked at your front shaft whilst in 4wd to see if has drive to the diff? if it is spinning & no one is home then process of elimination. check both cvs if there allright then it has something to do with dem auto hubs?. clicking sounds are not a good thing to hear. failin that i'd be pulling the auto hubs off & checking the outer cv hasn't broke at the hub. then i'd be replacing them with manual ones. thats just my 2c hope its of some help. cheers muvit

thanks mate gee that mount me tracks are dam hard after it's been raining made it up the quarrie but the rest was a bit tricky. I like the auto hubs but i can see what people say about manual being more reliable. i'll hav a look at what you said and hope for the best. thanks mate

Safest way to test the cv joints and diff would be to put the car in low 4 and gear with the engine off without driveing forward. Then try and turn the cv joint by hand from underneath. The cv should turn and the cv on the other side should also turn in the opposite direction. Try turning the drive shaft by hand. You shouldnt be able too but once you take the car out of gear you will be able too. If you pass these tests then suspect your auto hubs. They are not too hard to take apart clean and regrease but if you intend to do a lot of 4wding then manual hubs are the way to go. Autos have a few nasty habits like releaseing when changing direction. Exactly what you dont need in a failed hill climb

i have had an issue with auto hubs some may have expierienced previously, while on a 4wd trip in the kiapara harbour area the 4wd select (automatic everything) in my 1994 mitzi pajero would not disengage, it was under mechanical warranty but the place i had brought it from required it was taken back there. so on the return trip home, due to the auto hubs it was locked in 4wd drive, it chewed out both my bf goodrich front tyres damaged the pinion gears in the dif beyond repair and flogged four bushes in the front of both suspension arms from pulling so hard.... had i had manual hubs it could have stayed in 4wd and at least it wouldnt have done anymore damage to the drive train,
i will not assume you have a auto transmission and auto transfer case but if youdo, stick your head under the truck on the speedo cable side of the gearbox you will see the select cable for the transfercase. a small 6 inch cresent or 12 ml spanner should be sufficent to manual engage or disengage the four wheel drive by turning the spindle. similar to the set up on the automatic gearbox. ( who knows you may just have a stick or some debri stuck in there that has at some stage damaged the cable or stretched it enough that it is to loose to operate...
atleast this way if it does pack up on you it wont ruin your offroading that much...
i dont own a mu i own a rodeo, but if memory serves i think there is also a braket on the drivers side inner chassi rail where there is a factory join in the cable? not to sure it could be the join for the speedo cable?? pay to check it out
