Hey guys.
Ive been meaning to post a introduction thread up but was trying to make the car run first.
Got her running and was excited enough to go take her for a drive and the sign of disappointment.
I put her into drive (auto obviously..) and it wont engage. It will engage into reverse, but only when your reving the car at around 2500 thousand.
I played around with it and managed to get it to go forward, but only when the rev's were as high as 3000, but would only go in 4x4.
Info:
97 jackaroo 3.5 v6. 4 speed auto. 260xxx k's.
Really annoying now as i was getting all excited to take it 4x4ing.
Whats my options? Reco gearbox, or is it a simple fix? what sort of dollars am i looking at? Im on apprentice wages and budgeting obviously will have to occur.
Thanks guys.

Doesnt sound good. You say youve just got the car running. Tell us more because it might have a bearing on the cause. First thing to check is the auto trans fluid. If low it can cause this Thee are 2 marks on the dipstick. With Engine idling and cold in neuetral the fluid should be bright pinkish red and clear. If its milky there is water in it and a change of fluid and filter might help. If its brown or dark red its bad news and you need to talk to people willing to lend you lots of money. If the fluid is ok it could be a wiring issue but the fact that it does move at high revs seems to point away from that and more towards a big bill sorry good luck Gearbox rebuild would be around 3000+ second hand one with a garentee about half that +3 to 4 hours labour to fit

Well - what happened was, i was 4x4ing out in the bush (bad idea with terrible road tyres), came down a slight incline that didnt look bad, and just started skidding, brakes were doing nothing, with the use of a bit of steering control and power, i tryed hard to keep control of the car, but kept spotting this stump ahead and new i was gonna hit it. Warned everyone in the car, and mounted the stump under the drivers footwell. Hit it around 30kph. Now it did absolutely no damage to chassis, gearbox, etc, just bubbled up the floor, which is fixable.
Now the main problem i have is when it was stuck, i was going reasonably hard in forward and reverse to see if i could dislodge the car. The main problem i think is the torque converter, because it will engage at high revs and eventually the car will begin to move.
Is this a easy fix? im willing to drop the box and suss it out, but will try the fluid thing first.

One of the things all the experts always say is always to look where you want to go not where you dont . It works I managed to miss running up the back of a new landcruiser on wet road mud tyres and a heavy trailer by this method. 50 meters along a ditch with the wheels locked was a far kinder option. There are many things under the car that could of been damaged that might not be obvious. Realy my thoughts are to get the wagon towed to an expert who will be able to see things we cant over the internet and give a better idea of cost. Dont keep trying to run it except under expert guidence as more damage could occur. Hopefully you can get insurance to pay. Once fixed a 4wd course could be a good idea
