Geeves is spot on with the turning behaviour - should have mentioned that myself. Can be a bit skippy when turning on wet roads. Also makes it quite fun, if a little hairy.

Well Alan was right, changing diff heads does involve bystanders learning lots of new swear words, but not for the reason he mentioned. Got the diff out on Saturday and found it was 4.3, not a 4.55 like I thought. After counting the teeth about ten times we put the old diffhead back in and decided we need a 4.55 front diffhead to put in as well as I'm running 33" tyres.
Lessons learnt: 1. Check the diff ratio by jacking up and counting before you buy a new one or take it out (note there was no ratio code on the plate); 2. Don't listen to so called experts, ie dealer mechanics that tell you "yeah those all have 4.55s in them"
So if you have a 4.55 front diff head for sale let me know

The saga continues. My Wizard now has 4.55 diffs front and back, with the back being a LSD. The rear diff was easy as I had practised on it last month. It took about and hour and a half. At the same time I removed the rear sway bar as I'd broken a swaybar link again.
The front diff is an entirely different story. What a @#%*! of a job. It took two of us about six hours! The steps are listed below, hopefully this will put off anyone else from having the same idea as me. 1. remove wheels and place axle stands under chassis 2. remove calipers 3. remove hub assemblies (the left side we had to totally disassemble to replace the CV boots) 4. pull the half shafts out of the axle assembly 5. remove the suspension cross member 6. disconnect eletrical and vaccuum connections to freewheel actuator 7. unbolt sway bar links from bottom control arms 8. remove steering idler arm 9. undo bolts holding axle assembly in (3/4" drive socket set an advantage) 10. manouvre axle housing to ground without damaging it or yourself 11. dismantle freewheel actuator and remove 12. remove mounting brackets and pull axles out 13. unbolt diff head and remove 14. install new diff head and bolt up 15. reassemble every thing making sure you remember where everything goes and have no parts left over 16. fill diff with oil 17. don't run the halogen work light over with the 3 ton floor jack 18. test drive 19. put 4.3 front and rear diff heads on Trademe
This was a much bigger job than my mate and I expected.
This job goes better with the following 1. a good mate with an understanding wife 2. 3/4 drive socket set 3. rattle gun 4. a sense of humor
I haven't had a decent play with it yet. Took it for a run last night with the GPS going and was suprised to find with the 33" tyres and lowered diff ratio the speedo reads near enough to exactly right.
Thanks to Harry for supplying the front diff head and lending me his Haines Manual

Justin, I meant to suggest that you put some spacers between the diff and it's mounts to lower it a little and at the same time space the ball joints down to get some downwards travel back after screwing the torsion bars up.Did you mean to ring me yesterday afternoon or did you get a wrong number? Regards,Harry.

Well used the LSD in anger for the first time last weekend at Motu. Works a treat. I could climb things I never could before. It was great later in the week at Kiwi Challenge where, due to the rain, you needed 4L on the main access track! (Damn, I hate going back to work after a whole week off!) Definately need to be careful in the wet though, managed to turn it 90 deg at an intersection in Hamilton in the rain on Sunday. (Harry, yes i did mean to ring, but can't remember what for)

So you're unhappy about going back to work after a week, Justin.I'm starting a new job tomorrow and I've been off for a year. It's been a mad scramble to get 2 Bighorn boddies stripped, cut up and off to the scrappy in Hamilton while I still had time. Regards,Harry.

Alan, remember those 16 mm nuts you needed for your winch. It occurred to me that your winch being American it would have had 7/16" bolts and nuts, which have 5/8" nuts, near as dammit to 16 mm.And my Chinese copy would be the same. The mounting pattern is 10" x 41/2" which doesn't match up with anything sensible in metric. Regards,Harry.

It apears this is true although Ive never checked it myself. If you can get an early rear lsd in good nic at a good price give it a go. Do double check your ratios though as most early diffs are 4.56 and a lot of the ubs55 bighorns were 4.3. If you cant find one at a good price auto lockers for the front diff you already have are about 700 new

A lot of good info in there but its from a USA site so a couple of things to watch. Amigo is pretty much a mu.
Rodeo is sold in NZ as either a Wizard or 5 door Frontera.
USA never got the diesel engines the 2.8 and 3.1 engines mentioned are chevy V6s
Dana diffs are rare in Isuzus outside the USA We only get the Isuzu 8,10 and 12 bolt versions. Its a pitty because the range of lockers for Dana diffs is huge
I would love to lay my hands on a 4.77 diff but Ive never seen a reference to them outside USA sites
