Anyone had any luck freeing up the rear handbrake cables and if so what is the best way Or do I bite the bullet and buy a new one. I think North Range Road mud has got in and its nearly solid

1.5 hours with kerosene + an engine oil chaser has my cable working like new but I still have one problem with the boots at each end. They apear to of reached there use by date about 10 years ago and are in dire need of replacment but I cant seem to be able to match them anywhere new or old. Any suggestions for a supplier.A local cable maker told me they dont normaly put them back on but as one end of the cable points upwards I dont see this as a long term option

This may work, it depends on how far they are gone, I had a similar problem with a old tractor on my parents farm. The rubber boot end had perished rather badly. I was able to extend the life of the boot by a few years by leaving the damaged rubber on and placing some electrical heat shrink over it. 2seconds with the cig lighter and hey presto new boot cover.
Good luck...

I got some new ones made by a guy who works out of his garage here in chch. Was about $150 for a new one, made by hand, looks the same, fits the same, and new rubber boots (the best bit). My handbrake has never been so good. He just needs a sample of the old one. All the wreckers here in chch are generally out of the cables. I can't rember how to get hold of him and would have to dig around to find the receipt. I may have been refered to him by Safe R brakes.... I can't remember.
Seems to be a common problem, would a group buy be justifiable? I have samples lying around.

They are brand new everthing, almost identical look, identical fit, simple swap out replacment. Quite a good job I thought. He machines up new parts and all, crimps etc.
Alan are you just wanting the boots only? I'll have to make contact again somehow... I'll search through my recipts at the weekend.... but my filing system is not that good.

Ive solved my boot problem so should have no more handbrake cable issues (hope) Went into pickapart and got 2 boots off Nissan Sentra clutch cables The Nissan Sunny ones are the same Total cost $2 The one on the rear is a tight fit and a fraction long but if the narrow end is left on the shank of the cable eye it is goog and probably seals better here anyway The one on the front required 2 zip ties to tighten a little bit.

"Went into pickapart and got 2 boots"
OK, I hadn't managed to make contact with my 'guy'.... But if anyone else has any handbrake cable issues I'll keep looking. It won't be hard, I just haven't made the effort yet.
