ive got a strange grinding, winding noise, 90% sure its coming from the front drivers side. i thought oringanly it was the wheel bearing but have replaced and regreesed both sides. the noise comes and goes and dosnt usually last long and usually strats after hitting a bump. could this be the needle bearing? or there is another sealed bearing in the locking hup maybe this? could the noise becoming from the stearing box? any help appersiated

ok ive had a look at the roller bearing (i think) i took off the outer locking hub cover and took off the circlip and pushed the axle in and and could see the bearing and it seemed to look ok, still had a bit of greese and on sign of rust, so i pumped it full of greese and assembled, not sure if this is the problem tho?
any ideas?

That needle bearing sounds like the culprit but it only does any work if the hubs are locked and/or 4wd is activated. These are the only times that the axle is turning. It could also be the large washer between the cv and hub assembly that should also be given a good coating of grease. Other possible suspects are stone in brakes but you would of fixed this at the same time as the bearing Low brake shoes or badly adjusted squeal spring on the side. The spring thing on the side of the shoe is meant to touch the disc makeing a unmissable noise when the shoe is worn down but I have had one set where the spring was touching with 5mm pad left and anouther set that never made a noise at all. You would of checked your pads when you had the callipers of wouldnt you.

pads are basicly brand new, and yeah no stones in there, i thought that i would only be in 4wd?
will check to see if the low pad warning thing didnt get bumped and bent.
its a rather simmiler noise i had about a month but it went away, but after it went away the stearing box started leacking again (which got fixed) so could it be that or just a coincedence

ok narrowed it down to the locking hub i think, its also the passenger side.
when i jacked the wheel off the ground and spun the wheel there was a squeking noise. took the locking hup off and now no squeking, took it for a sort drive up the road with it off and no noise.
so i take it that the hub needs a new bearing or greese?

Are yours manual or auto?. If manual they are fairly straightforward to pull apart and fix. If you can do a wheel bearing they shouldnt be a problem

Up until a few days ago I had Superwinch hubs. After 2 sets of bearings, problems with tapered hex screws and various graunching noises (which I eventually tracked down to the hubs not releasing fully due to rust), I finally killed the hex taper screws with an angle grinder and fitted a set of Aisin hubs. Hopefully won't look back now!
