Has anyone made thier own extended shackles? I decide i would give it a go today, and this is what i cam up with the standard shackles on the MU are 6mm thick, so i decided to make 8.5mm with a 2mm tube and with a high tensile bolt for strength. Total is 3" extension, so i should gain another 1.5" at the rear. ill post some pics later My main concern is safety so please corrct me if im worng... then ill just E-Bay them... lol.. jokes.. Here are the pics.

I made my own a few years back with tensile steel rod which I threaded and turned in a lathe. The problem with simple bolt designs is tightening the bolts creates a crush of the shackle onto the bushes. this is why I made the one I made the way I did, as were the orignal ones. A turned bolt/shaft witha step to create a fixed shackle width. However the bolt method would not create much of a safety issue I believe. Just the bushes might get a bit harassed. Thicker plates will help to avoid any bend or flex. toolsnz.com/james/4wd/shackles/Sorry, my pic's arn't good and taken after a splash of mud... doesn't show much other than orignal design and size

I got some standard greasable shackles and used thoes pins as they are the right size and had the steps so it didnt crush the bushes, which were also replaced. I also got some exteded shocks which make HUGE difference! this is how it eneded up... These are all the parts. u can see the different threads on the shackle pins Original This is the finished product, turned out really well i thought The difference from the old its extreemly obvious! but ill just keep it all black.. lol... New Shocks to support the drop 620mm total extension compaired to the old Here is the Flex, no issues with the Brake line or Hand Brake lines.

Just wondering, are you getting any tailshaft vibrations when the power is idling (between power on and off when on road especially at higher speeds, say 80-100kms?). I'm assuming that you have a 2" leaf lift as well as the extended shackles

Just wound up the front tosion bars, raised the front 40mm lower than the rear, still have plenty of bump stop room, which im going to cut down....
total over height is 960mm front g to g and 1000mm at the rear. with 31" wheels.

I've made a couple of sets of shackles with no issues - 260mm long which gives a 3" lift, and m14 bolts. Getting the front end to match is the tricky bit

Probably seen ya around,....I'll keep an eye out a silver MU with extended shackles (I hope DOT don't see you tho, the black paint does help, if you know what I mean). I'm a Blue MU with reflective blue tinting, you can't miss me 4wding, I'd love too but I'm started my soccer season which takes up my 90% of my weekend until september,.... Send me PMs if are heading off and I'll see if it fits with me,...I'm keen to try out the 33" bighorn muddies and rear autolocker (if I ever get it installed,...LOL) Cheers

Ok, so after winding up the front, I took my wonky looking Mu into the shop to have the camber and wheel alignment done. After 4hrs and $150 later i managed to get it done.
The previous shop that i took it to (which was less than 2 months ago) stripped the camber bolts!! so they were just sitting in there, and to top it off.... he replaced one of the bolts with some cheap / old / different sized bolt!! after running to the bolt shop to see what they can do.. it turns out that the bolt is some odd pitch so it cost me just shy of $40 for 4 of them!! arg!
after all that it seems to be good... i have some issues where he wound the steering rack right over to one side and the steering guide arm was hitting the lower arm on the front right suspension.... oh so typical!

Those are monster bolts and normaly torqued from memory to 120 ftpound. How does a person strip those. It would of taken at least 2 people and a long bar. Hopefully you can get them to comer to the party on this one. If those bolts had come out your front end would of been on the deck and if you were doing 100kph at the time it would of been ugly
