Hello,
Can anyone tell me if installing extractors and a hi-flow cat converter on my 92 MU exhaust system will give me more power? I've heard that it doesn't make a difference on diesel engines, but the local muffler shop said that it will.
Any info appreciated!
Thanks
Daniel

You cant fit extractors to a turbo diesel engine. Even if you could theres nowhere on that side of the engine to fit them. Also diesels of that vintage dont have cat converters normaly so why fit one. You muffler shop might be meaning a particular brand of exhaust system etc. What does work well is a 2.5 inch exhaust with a single free flow muffler. These are the type you can see through. Turbo diesels dont tend to get noisy with this set up so wont sound like a boy racer but the improvment is quite good esspecialy at low revs which is hard to belive but true. Some people have gone to 3 inch but you start haveing issues about where to run the pipe.

Unless your MU is a 2.6 petrol engine, then as Geeves said, extractors & cat converter doesn't apply.
You could replace the exhaust manifold but that would be very expensive and probably not give any benefit as that's a tuning trick and not going to affect flow at diesel RPMs.
The best bet is a larger exhaust, preferably from the turbo back. As per other posts it can give a good power increase and can increase boost from the turbo.
If you're in Australia, you should be able to get a full exhaust for about $700 installed. If you're in Sydney and get someone to do it for under $400 then let me know.
Cheers, Graham.

I got a 2.5" exhaust with a single muffler about 2yrs ago for $190. It was from the 'cat' back though. I got it from Castle Hill Exhaust.

Cool, you are local.
I wrote down Castle Hill exhaust's address & number just today, plus a few other places along windsor Rd that I'm going to check out on my way home if I can get out of work early one day.
Where abouts are you? I'm at Winston Hills and work at Norwest.
Ciao! Graham.

I'm also in Winston Hills!
Just near Winston Hills Public School.
I've got the black Mu with standard bull bar, raised a couple of inches and 32" BFG Muddies.
Which part of Winsto do you live?

Cool, there's 3 MUs in Winston Hills then.
I went to "Adams Exhausts" at Castle hill (it's on Victoria Ave) and they quoted me $1,000 for a 2.5" exhaust & muffler, from the flange joint back (that's not turbo back, but about another 30cm below. Alternatively, about $400 to replace the muffler & tail pipe which they think should still improve performance by removing the restrictive muffler.
Interestingly, there's some device just before the muffler which he thinks might be an exhaust brake - it's hooked up via some boost/vacuum or maybe hydraulic lines, but not really sure what it is.
In the end, that's a little more expensive than I was hoping for. I'll check out a couple more places soon.

"Interestingly, there's some device just before the muffler which he thinks might be an exhaust brake"
Yep, a common misconception, it's actually part of the engine quick warm up system, not and exhaust brake. There are many posts here describing it's operation if you do a search.
