Trying to make a 4JB1TC fit in 4x4 Dodge Dakota. Diesel Trooper Bell Hsg. on the engine is too long. Looks like some of the transmission might be in it. Is there a shorter than 16 inches long bell housing that would bolt to the 4JB1TC?? Maybe off ELF delivery truck, S.A.E. bell hsg.?? Need clutch throw out lever. Want 12 inches long or so.

Manual five speed with the integral transfer case. I plan to use the Dakota 5 speed and transfer case. I just need engine a few inches further back to nest the front diff. in the oil pan contour.
Thanks, I'm wide open for suggestions.

Have a measure of the isuzu 5 speed It might be easier to use the 5 speed that came with the engine. Otherwise you might have to make your own bell housing which is an engineering possibility but also the stuff of very bad dreams

Geeves...thanks for the input. Yeah, the whole thing is tough. I'd like to see the design all the way to the end before I start. I'm trying to build a high mpg little truck. It looks like it's all about drag coefficient. Was all ready to launch, and my son says, sure would be nice if it were 4WD.
The Dakota seems appropriate, and matches my '02 W250 Cummins. The Dakota front diff. is on the LHS, which virtually eliminates the Isuzu trans. Plus, it would be nice to retain the Dakota trans, transfer case, alignment etc.
But, roughly, it looks like the Isuzu transmission bell housing at 15 in. long, would cause interference with the Dakota front diff. If I could get the engine back just 2-3 inches my chances would be about 80% of success.
That's why I was wondering if there was a, say, non-4WD bell hsg. A marine 4JB1 to #5 SAE exists, and I dragged out a 10k HD Dexter trailer brake drum, and it looks like a starting point, but like you said, bad dream coming.

Anouther train of thought. Why not redesign the sump on the engine to go round the diff. It will probably mean redesigning the oil pickup but this is a lot less presise. Ive seen the results of a home made bellhousing where the gearbox and engine centers were about 0.2mm out of line. The clutch was stuffed in 200km. Only other thought is maybe a different engine ie Nissan. Isuzu make the best small engines but the Nissan td27 isnt far behind.

sump redesign isnt that hard holden 6s in landies had a flat sump and way back when my mates and I were playing with escorts and cortinas sump mods or interchanges were pretty common prob easier now we didnt have mig welders

Yes, that's an interesting idea. I'm worried it would even involve the aluminum casting..."upper oil pan" lump that sticks out the L.H.S., that accepts the dipstick. Have to saw that off and tig it on the other side. It looks structrual to boot.
I'm probabaly going to take the plunge and try it. I have the motor, and have an excellent Dakota spied. The Dakota has frame fixed front diff, and automotive half shafts going out to CV joints, with double wishbone suspension. Car like ride, and handling good. Plus the dodge tcase has some power divider 40/60 to F/R. So I figure the f and r diffs are tuned to all work together. Soooo, I wanted to make adapter from Isuzu bell hsg. to dodge trans input shaft, pilots, etc.
