Thanks Harry!
Though the piping and wiring surrounding the engine is still quite a mess. This MU is a JDM. It came into our country right hand drive (from Japan) and was converted only to left hand drive. The steering, brakes, dashboard, etc. were transferred to the other side.

Whats the point of going EGR less?
Mine is already done.
Does it improve power, or improve economy?

tsenior that thing u might be refering to under the mu might be the cold start restrictor. which restricts the exhaust to warm the engine quicker. its really not needed depending on where you live ie. lots of snow usually a throw away if upgrading exhuast. what u reakon guys??

Joe Mine had the steel gasket to start with which was fine at the start but 3 months later it leaked with an almighty squeal. Made a new gasket out of standard gasket paper and its been good for 9 years since. Theres also a wide selection of sealants out there that would do the job

Well if its not needed and its restricting then it definitly can go.

Egr gone!, but when i took off the peice that was bolted to the intake manifold, its so crusty with black scum.. did anyone take the intake manifold off and give it a clean? just wondering cause mine the holes where just about blocked off with scum.

Probably cant hurt to clean this out except for the cost of a gasket.

cant wait to do the Top mount intercooler mod, I have a bighorn intercooler on the way , So tempted to use a PWR Barrel intercooler until i seen the price for the setup... top mount cheaper option for now.

just out of curiosity, does any one know when the egr opens and closes, try this experiment, cruise at a speed of say 80-100kmh and listen to the engine, try and disable the egr(block the vacuum hose, with a small bolt say)do the same thing and listen to the engine while cruising again, see if there is any difference, the reason for this experiment is when the egr is blocked off and when cruising the engine produces boost, while only a little it does make the engine work a little harder(also back pressure from the turbo)i notice that if the egr is plumbed back to the exhaust, the engine didn't sound strained at all,in fact it was quite, though i did experience a little more lag.

on my '96 3.1L MU, I tried several options on the EGR to match engine performance; 1. with the 2 EGR valves operational 2. with 2 EGR valves disabled by disconnecting the 2 EGR solenoid valve electrical sockets 3. with only one EGR valve disabled leaving one EGR valve operational(the 1st EGR valve in the intake manifold when you are facing the engine) I observed the best performance I got is when I tried option 3. In my observation, 1 EGR valve in operation is OK for the MU, 2 valves is too much exhaust gas recirculation which hesitates the engine.

hi Astro49. What bolts did you use with the new plates? Did u use the old ones off the egr and cut them down or buy new ones.? Seems the old ones will be too long. Thanks Dan
