My turbo has just died 3.1 TD MU. I have been quoted 2k aud to fit new turbo & boost gauge. Is it worth searching for a 2nd hand turbo ? I have been told the 2.8 & 3.1 are totally different. Can anyone point me in the right direction or offer any alternatives. [ Cheers

I'm pretty sure someone has put a 2.8 engine's turbo onto their 3.1. It runs out of puff a little sooner but still worked, plus they gained the benefit of the 2.8 turbo being serviceable and if they wanted to install an intercooler, they could rotate the turbo housing to allow for the intake piping.
I bought a boost gauge from ebay for $50 and installed it myself without a problem, so this shouldn't be a big impact in your price.
Good luck! Graham.

As Graham said they are different, the 2.8 is spec'd for a slightly lower output than the 3.1. But saying that Matt in Perth runs a 2.8 turbo on a 3.1 motor with an intercooler and she seems to go fine. The new IHI replacements for the 3.1 are servicable and cost around $1100 AUD. If you are going second hand I'd opt for a 2.8, (normally around the $4-500) and get it serviced as a second hand 3.1 original is supposedly not servicable so you could wind up with the same issue. It takes about 4 hours to fit so I guess you'd be looking at $1400-1600 at $50 an hour. Have a shop around I got new one from Auckland NZ for $1000 all up, I just got a mate to bring it back on trip over. J

Yep as Justin said, the 2.8 is an identical swap physically. The specs say its a slightly lower top end output, but this gives more boost down low and alot quicker. Yeah its serviceable and after about 200000 (hard)km still spins well and my MU still goes like a cut cat!
If I had the cash and needed a newie I do the newer IHI one that Justin bought but if you just want to get on the road again, no probs with a 2.8 turbo.
Goodluck Matt.

Hi Bullfrog, Try MTQ Engine Systems in Toowoomba ph no 4633 1355 ask for Robert MacKay (old school mate of mine " Bruce Bates" thats me) the guys in Rocky have told me that the replacement turbo is a re- fixable one. If you can quote the old ones model no it will help, sorry I dont have a proper IHI turbo on my 3.1 I was taken to the cleaners by a mob in Mackay cost me $1600 for a re-built turbo, wish I could afford to buy a new one. Hope this info is of some help. Cheers Bruce. P.S. If your talking to Robert mention Barcaldine, that where we went to school.

I wouldn't think so, and it may be the same unit as I did a bit of research into this and not a lot of peole know what there talking about. Fortunately Diesel & Turbo in Auckland did. But I wouldn't loose sleep over it as long as you use a good oil and change it frequently it'll last. J

I've been told a million different things about the 3.1 turbo. Does anyone know why its not a servicable unit ? Can it be serviced at all ?
Cheers

I have been down this path... the answer is no. The 3.1 turbo cannot be pulled apart and repaired or serviced. I was told otherwise but ended it in tears, I had to buy a new one. The reason was due to the type of bearings within it. There are ceramic caged ball bearings from memory, the ceramic cage is damaged when the unit is pulled apart and cannot be reinstalled.

Does anyone know where in brisbane I could find a new 3.1 turbo or even a second hand one - have tried all import wreckers but nothing. If anyone has anything let me know as I am still waiting delivery of a new 3.1 turbo & am now sick of waiting!
Cheers Matt

Sorry Matt just saw your post regarding the oil, I use Valvoline super lite diesel. It was recommended to me by a guy who runs cummings turbocharged semi's and he swears by it. I've used it in my 2.8 & 3.1 for the last 2+ years and never had a problem and its $35 for 10 litres. I looked at the fully synthetic option but from what the experts tell me if you can't guarantee it’s been used in the engine since day 1, then don't use it. J P.S It took me 4 hours to fit my turbo and I'd rather have a conversation with my ex wife than do another for fun ;D
