Interesting coment on the oil. I changed to castrol Delo 400 at 160000km after useing Repco "special"diesel since 92000 and all my crankcase fumes stoped and oil consumption halfed from 500ml per 5000 to only a cupful per oil change. What reason do they give for not useing synthetic in a engine that has used normal oil.

My Mu just blew a turbo as well. Saturday morning started doing loud whistling noise than grinding noise after which it stopped dead. No boost at all, the impella is jammed and I need replacement unit pronto.

The technical reason was something to do with the valve seats and mineral based oils affecting the wear pattern differently to synthetic oil? I don't know if this is true but I heard it from more than one source. Apparently if you change from mineral to synthetic after 50K of use on the former can cause seepage and oil burning issues. J

Hi Guys, My 3.1 XE Mu has a seized turbo as well. I have heard about the inability of rebuiding the unit. I was wondering if it would be a viable option to install a Garett unit and re-plumb the exhaust and intake? Has anyone tried this ? Or, because of this govt's anti light diesel (4wd) stance ( and the increasing costs), would it be cheaper in the long run to convert to petrol? I was thinking Lexus V8 or small block chev. Has anyone done that here yet? Your thoughts gentlemen... Regards, Stan

There are some parts you buy from holden some you dont. If you cant get it elsewhere holden prices are ok On some parts they undercut the compitition but not many. Always worth checking though except for std maint parts.

Apparently there's a MU with an LS1 V8 in Sydney and Yarno has a Lexus V8 (4L) in his, so yes it's possible to swap engines for something big in cubes.

You could probably throw in a w12 or a v10 from a VW.All depends on your budget I guess. Harry.

Personally I want one of those twin turbo 4L V8 diesels out of an Audi A8 275ish HP unmodified. More horsepower that the Lexus (the 191kW on out of a GT Soarer) sitting on the floor at my mates ready to go in his new winch truck.
A question for those who have seized turbos - What size exhaust were you running and how soon after purchase?

Not on the turbo used on the 3.1. It has a ceramic bearing that cant be replaced so when turbo fails its the same as when a thermostat fails you just replace it Just costs a little more. The good news is that most turbo shops replace the turbo with a repairable type turbo.

One that either doesnt boost any more or or makes so much noise the stereo cant drown it out or spits oil everywhere. It will be obvious when it is either dead or should be put down.

I spotted this www.trademe.co.nz/structure/auction_detail.asp?id=45171508&permanent=on trademe which might be useful to someone on here, looks like a later 3.1 turbo from the info the guy has posted, nothing to do with me, just passing on the news. It looks identical to the one in my 95 Bighorn so I'm wondering if I have the later one already , or if this is in fact an earlier one , or do they both look identical . Geeves, I'm sure you ment Caltex Delo 400 above, $28 at the Red shed for 5 ltres, its what I use. Cheers, Steve

It will be obvious when it is either dead or should be put down. ok..thanks...but would it affect the overall pull? or you just won't fill the boost anymore but itll still pull like a naturally aspirated one or the non turbo ones. TIA.

i called AMMS today... $1650 to remove and refit and rebuild the 2.8 turbo. Replacing the compressor wheel with a larger one, making it high flow and also giving more power www.amms.net.au is the website or call them 1300 305 709 im looking into buying a rebuilt t03 and getting a new manifold made up. will be a bit cheaper!
