Hi all, just wondering if anyone has got A K&N filter in their 3.1 MU. What I really need is the K&N filter number as myself and an a guy at a auto power parts store (local rev head shop that do K&N filters) can not find one that fits. There is one listed in the k&N manual but its only about 3/4 the size of a proper paper filter and NOT the correct size. Telling me that you have one from ..............? although might help but its the filter number that will definitely do it.
Please any help will ?
Cheers Chris

Hello,
Yep I think most people here who have K&N have been using Pod filters. Chris if you rmember....Dave had one in his MU on the Nyno night...I would be asking him....I know that he pulled it out of his Hilux...but it seemed to fit quit nicely.
On day when I was at Northside 4x4 accesororis where we did the dyno night they had a K&N filter which was almost a perfect fit sitting on the shelf...it just needed a little filler stuck underit to make the full hight.
Have you got your Mu sorted out yet? what was the problem?

Yeah I should have clarified that point, I didn't want the a pod one unless it can fit in the air box (I will look into that if I can not find a cylinder one). Thanks Frank, yeah I remember now that dave has one and I will give him call as soon as I get back to Brisbane (In tassie for a 2 weeks). I doubt that he will have the filter number though, I will see. At the moment still have not found out any more about my lack of power or eccomony issues, i have been back the northside for 2 hours of tuning but that didn't do anything. I will get injectors cleaned and recalibrated and then see how that goes. Just wondering if not having the POWER on and overdrive on would have given me the extra 10-15 Kilowatts to me back on par with the other 3.1 MUs ?
If I find out any K&N filters that work I will post it for everyone.
Cheers Chris

Hi Chris - have been running a K&N in my 2.8 bighorn for couple of years now and find it gives small but definite increase in performance when clean. Bought filter that fits straight into 2.8 airbox from Repco for NZ$105 trade. Very small filter - about 50-60 percent size of a paper cartridge - this is normal for K&N.
Try Repco and see if anything made specifically for 3.1 Isuzu. Perhaps take your paper cartridge in and measure its height and centre hole diameter. Then a matter of checking to see if any other filter matches these measurements so you can put it straight in airbox. Pod filters outside airbox useless around water. If centre hole of some other K&N is right but filter a fraction too short you could always cut and glue some sort of rubber spacer to top or bottom to make it fit.
Re your truck's lack of power - is it getting enough diesel? Does it blow any smoke under max acceleration round 3000rpm? Wonder also if the pump timing is a bit retarded.

Thanks everyone for the replies, sorry it took so long to reply myself, WELL the saga continues , I looked at the one the Les suggested (2415) but its to is about half the size of what I need (same size as RYCO A1388). The K&N catalog suggests the smaller one like the 2415 but I would need some sort of spacer or block of wood in the air box the prop the filter in position. Although this would still work I am assuming that it’s far better for the car to breathe through a filter with a larger surface area therefore more power and better economy. So I just went to the K&N website and just searched through their listing of cylinder closed end filters and found one with near perfect dimensions (off by 1-3mm in different places) but pretty much perfect match to the RYCO A1388 paper filter. Only problem is that K&N doesn't stock them in OZ, so it’s a 6 week wait as they are shipping it from the states. From memory the correct size is K&N 1009 but I will have to double check and see how the fit is, but %99 sure, cost about $120-130. I will post the results of fitting when it happens, if anyone else wants to get a K&N filter, I'd suggest that they do the same as I did and do not just go with what the catalog says as it is wrong or there are MUs with diferent size filters, check your dimensions of your current filter and double check it through the website before ordering.Cheers all and thanks for the ideas Chris

Rocket Industry don't know of anything for the 3.1 mu, so i have come to the conclusion that K&N don't make one! I think im going to explore the posibility of getting an airbox from a jackaroo or rodeo, have to make some more enquires...

Only measurements that matter are the hight and inside diameter. The outside will be less as the cotton breaths better. In NZ a few people have fitted pod style filters inside the std air box by clamping them to the pipe as it comes through the lid.

Hiya K&N do have a replacement filter that fits in the aircleaner canister for the 3.1 Mu, no modifications required. I can't remember the number offhand as have had for a couple of years. They dont have 1 listed I just searched dimensions till I found what would fit. I will take it out tomorrow and post dimensions here.

Have just removed my air filter from Mu and found K&n number. Filter is Part Number E2417 it is for a 1984 Toyota landcruiser LJ70/73 with 2.4 turbo diesel 2LT engine.. This is a direct replacement for the 3.1 MU's of 94-95 as I've had it in both, will most likely fit later models as well. Hope this helps guys.

Yay! Thanks for that, i think i will b picking one up (as soon as i can find the time! i'll let u know how it all goes!
does it need a spacer under it??? my filter is 203cm high and the E2417 is 194cm high.... does it seals alright in your cars???

Hiya, no spacer needed, seals up just fine. The E2417 actually measures in at more the 194mm, I think around 198-199mm. So fits fine

Mudgrip4 said in a earlier post "Re your truck's lack of power - is it getting enough diesel? Does it blow any smoke under max acceleration round 3000rpm? Wonder also if the pump timing is a bit retarded."
My mu is doing exactly that, it struggles to 3000rpm then a puff of black smoke and then acceleration really picks up.
any ideas?

Lack of power should be a separate thread. When I had the seals done it ran like yours except no smoke. They had bumped the mixture screw. After it was fixed at no charge it ran better than it ever ran. My money would be on somthing sticking inside the pump
