the mu(2.8) 'seems' to have a nackered battery i think,
the other day we got in a drove it to the shop fine then we started it up and drover down the road a little bit more, then when we went to start again the starter could hardly turn over?
seems strange as work previous 2 times ok, i ended up crash starting it and goes fine, the alternater seems to be charging and when turned off the stereo seems to go fine but no juice to turn over, even with jumper leads to another running car it wouldnt turn over,
so im thinking could this problem be starter related or just battery, just havnt got my spear $$ and dont want to waste $200 on battery or money on a starter if i dont need too
any input? thanks

Clean and tighten your battery connections before doing anything else. 84% chance this is your prob Get a freind to hold the multimeter on the battery posts when you crank it over. It should drop to about 10v while crancking At 8v the fuel cutoff works so no more start possible At 4v the engine stops turning over. Then charge the battery and try again. If it doesnt hold 10v while crancking measured on the battery post not the clamp the battery is shot

termals are fine, was the first thing i checked, i had the battery out and charged it over night, still nothing, the volt meter on the dash drops right down to nothing even when i had it coneceted with jumper leads.
was thinking maybe that the starter has a high resistents or something, but after you post it sounds like battery, dam desiel needing a huge expensive battery:(
thanks alan!

Check with a proper multimeter and check at the battery posts. If you have the original lead battery clamps they are notorious for forming a hard light grey coating that is hard to see and a very good insulator. If you havent got shinny lead it aint clean

hmmmm, just brought a new battery 600 cca, but wouldnt start still. the volt gauge only went up to around 8-10v so i was thinking maybe i need to take it for a drive to charge it up a bit?? went for a short 5min drive but still dont start.
other wise what else would be causing this and what steps to i need to go though, thanks

Is it trying to crank the engine when you turn the key?? It maybe the start wire to the starter solenoid or the solenoid maybe stuck!

sounds like time to rebuild the starter motor. Its slightly easier to get at than the alternator. Probably worn brushes. Not too serious

Check the wires going to the starter, and check the earth going to the block, make sure they are all tight and not corroded.

The rear bearing in the starter motor has collapsed. This makes the starter motor work real hard to crank, and it only gets half a turn and stops. You could connect 3 batteries and it still would not start. I had to overhaul my starter just before I sold The Beast. Other option is to upgrade to a Vehicross - fun fun fun.

Damn that Geeves. I could have had a nearly complete spare car- right colour and everything. We don't have trade me over here on the big island - is there any way of tracing or contacting who bought it??
There was one for sale here a few months ago for $45,000 (no thats not a typo) Not sure if it sold or not.
They are a bit thirsty on fuel, but they are fun to drive. ;D On the road, and off the road, but hopefully not both at the same time like that fellow did. Regards

pk, there are two of them sitting in a car yard in Dunedin, NZ. From memory they have been there a while. Both are 1997. One is $13,000 and the other $10,000, makes that $45,000 (Aus) look a bit steep! Here's the address www.arv.co.nz

Yes - there is a problem importing them into Australia. Thats why I was so interested in the wrecked one - I think I can get it in on the basis that it will never be on the road - just stripped down for spare parts. As far as I have been able to trace - only 8 of them in Australia, and most are very heavily guarded by enthusiests. The woman with the $45,000 unit was a bit over the top, and no better condition than mine. Same year and mileage and all, and I only paid $14,000 for mine. Geeves, they run very well on a 10% ethanol blend at 95 octane which I am currently (today) buying for $1.56 per litre. I get around 9 km / litre driving like an old granny, or 6 km / litre driving like a hoon. Somewhere in the middle I am comfortable, after all I am 58 and grey haired, and it wouldn't be a nice look being arrested for hooning ;D ;D

It didnt look that badly damaged. It doesnt take a lot of panel beating to get to the write off price. My bighorn is in a condition these days where dirty paint would almost see it written off.

starter motor, solinoid, wiring. I trust it has run since the rebuild otherwise theree could be something installed very wrong. Can you turn the motor over by hand
