Jaycars sell tiny electrical thermo switches for about 20 You will probably need to use a relay as well as I dont think they would handle fan current. Anouther way is to wire it to your 4wd light. On road its not often the fan will give much help as airflow above 50kph is enough but off road it will be a help most of the time Can I get at the 4wd light without ripping the dash off as I have try it before and came to a really big stop. But its a very good idear and I will hook up a on/off switch to it aswell so if I need to turn it off.

you could get at the 4WD light at the sensor switch on the side of the gearbox, or somewhere in between... light a plug/socket at the firewall?

Sounds like you hooked up the wrong way. Use a meter to work out your battery and earth points and switch points then draw a picture of your expected result and all will be clear as mud

ok this is from memory and a typical way of wireing lamps. One side of the lamp conects to ground the other to the switched contact that turns it on with battery the other side of the switch. What you probably did was hook battery to one side of the fan then hooked the earth lead to the switched side of the bulb which creates the live circuit through the bulb to earth. What you need to do is take the battery lead off the fan and hook this to earth and the fan should run. Two very important things to note here 1 put a 10 amp fuse in the circuit just in case I have visulised this wrong Fuses are cheap insurance 2 the fan will probably run backwardsas you have reversed your current flow easy to fix if its a problem. Personaly I would use a relay to drive the fan and drive the relay from the light othherwise you risk burning out the switch for the light

After a long try to get it to turn on with the 4x4 light I went down to a local MU owner friend that had done this mod and he told me how to hook it up so when the engine is running it truns on. Im happy with that for now and only took 5mins to find it and hook it up. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
thx for all your help
